From the bag of Samsung comes another cool gadget having many mind blowing features. Let me tell you what it really is – it is a smart phone which will not be very heavy for your pocket running on Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system. As the name suggests Samsung Omnia Lite is a modest phone loaded with tons of features. It provides full support for HSDPA, Wi-Fi and GPS. It is quite cheap and you can easily afford it. You can pick it up for free on a £20-per-month contract, or around £200 SIM-free.
If you are looking for the traditional look of smart phone in Samsung Omnia Lite, then I must say that you will be disappointed because it is not having much width as was the feature of some of the recent Windows mobile and Android devices. But mind it that the narrower profile of Samsung Omnia Lite is not its drawback because it makes it quite comfortable as compared to some of the other smart phones of Samsung. But what is to be noted that the current form of Samsung Omnia Lite does compromise with the screen size of the phone. The 76 mm (3 inches) screen has a slightly awkward 240×400 pixel resolution due to which while viewing a webpage horizontally, not much of the web page gets fitted in the screen and you have to do a lots of vertical scrolling to view the complete page.
Touch Screen Experience of Omnia Lite
Due to the Microsoft’s Windows mobile smart phone operating system Samsung Omnia Lite is very finger friendly. A cool new feature is – unlock the screen without unlocking the phone. This helps you to read your emails and text messages without bothering you to unlock your phone. But point to be noted is that it is not much user friendly when compared with Android and Iphone’s operating system. To overcome this drawback Samsung has integrated its own TouchWiz user interface with the Microsoft’s operating system in Samsung Omnia Lite. Due to this cool integration Samsung Omnia Lite is now loaded with three home screens and switching can be done very easily, i.e., by swiping your finger back and forth across the display screen. Moreover there are varieties of widgets (to display weather forecasts and facebook status updates and many more) that you can drag and drop on the home screens which makes it very user friendly. Another aspect of this integration of Windows mobile operating system and TouchWiz is that it sometimes proves to be too much for the 624MHz Marvell processor and 256MB of RAM of the Samsung Omnia Lite. It gives you a quite lumpish and unresponsive feeling while switching between the home screens and while switching between the already opened applications.
Camera Performance
Let’s talk about the 3.2 megapixel resolution camera embedded in the Samsung Omnia Lite. It has what we can call an “average” camera. This so because the autofocus of the camera is quite slow and due to which there is a painfully long gap between the pressing of phone’s camera button and clicking a photograph. Although the pictures taken by it are quite good when taken outdoors but indoors shots are noisy and are not what we can call a good photograph.
The other specifications of Samsung Omnia Lite are quite good and eye catching. The flash memory provided for storing files is 512 MB which can be enhanced greatly by using micro SD memory cards that are quite cheap. Battery life is also very good. You can go on for 2 days without recharging your Samsung Omnia Lite and that’s a decent thing for a smart phone. The support for HSDPA and Wi-Fi results in fast browsing and on board GPS technology works well with the Google maps application giving you the power to travel anywhere without any tension.
Design & Looks of Omnia Lite
The overall design of Samsung Omnia Lite is quite conservative but the cool pattern on the back of the phone is quite eye catching and adds to the stylish nature of the phone giving it a dainty look. Most of the flaws of the previous version of Windows Mobile operating system have been overcome, namely uncomfortable contacts, calendar, etc. Many new applications have been developed for Samsung Omnia Lite, e.g., apps for contacts, file manager, calendar, notes (voice notes as well), Java emulator, photo album, settings, multimedia player, unit converter, internet browser (Opera Mobile) and the likes. It shows that the Samsung has worked hard to improve the quality of software they provide and in my opinion they have succeeded in this regard.
Conclusion
It should be admitted that the Samsung Omnia Lite is surprising in both positive and negative way. The decent line of features being offered by it, nice and slim overall design and low price tag are what makes it worth buying whereas the average performance and over complicated software is what that makes it a “not so good” choice for the end users.
It seems this is a nice phone for my budget. I know its earlier phones the samsung omnia was a huge success, one of my friends was using it earlier. Where can i get the current pricing info for this phone?
just picked up a couple unlocked cell phones and i love them. one omnia one hd2. love my omnia. big screen, fast processor. recorder and camera are great to watch my kids and get memories. games keep us busy and facebook is fun. very happy with our unlocked world phones. battery life is long and the gps and email help me keep in touch with my clients. much better than our old unlocked iphones. battery life is very long and the web browser keeps me in touch with the world on my long trips. not to mention the battery life is long enough to last the long bus trips so that's nice. it's a little glitchy sometimes but that's ok. got our last couple unlocked mobile phones at gsmallover.com 2 thumbs up
