The Sturdier Slider

Nokia 6700 Slide is a slider which has a compact & smooth design with a range of bedazzling colours. Front panel is a 2.2-inch screen that could have been larger by optimising its space below. On top right of screen it has a secondary camera. Below its screen is D-pad. Left of D-pad, it has menu soft key, below that it has the island key of home that works as menu key on the home screen mode & then it has calling key. At the right, we can find soft key for contacts, the island key of clear & the call end key. Both the contact key and the menu soft key could be assigned with other functions.

Sliding up the phone reveals a flat, black, & a very comfortable alphanumeric keypad. Left panel is bare & right one only sporting the
camera key. MicroSD card slot is located under battery cover but it’s hot-swappable. Top panel of the phone has a USB slot, charging slot & 2.5 mm jack. Back panel of the handset sports a camera & dual LED flash. Further mechanism for opening of the battery cover also is pretty unique. At first one has to open a cover over its USB port & then press a tiny button.

Packed with Power

It runs on the Symbian OS 9.3 with a Series 60 User Interface FP2. It features 4 home screens and standby themes to choose from & icons on screen would change accordingly. Themes include horizontal icon bar, basic, vertical icon bar and the contact bar. The most varied of all the themes is the contacts bar theme. In this Nokia 6700 Slide has a smart style by Symbian 9.3 OS with S60 3rd edition UI, it has a 5.0-megapixel auto-focus camera, but it does not support GPS or Wi Fi. The row constitutes of the contact thumbnails where one can add their favourite contacts on the home screen. After it has been added one can easily connect to the desired contact & even see recent communication which one had with them in the past from the handset. Below those there are 3 tabs for Email, calendar, & Share Online. Below it there is a dock with 6 customisable functions. Moreover the UI is very responsive & the phone gives up snappy performance with its 600 Mhz processor.

Nokia 6700 Slide supports Mail for Exchange beside other POP3 & IMAP4 clients of Email. Setting an account is pretty easy & the device supports attachment. Since it doesn’t include a document viewer, user won’t be able to open Docs, Excel and PowerPoint files. It also has pre-loaded settings of Yahoo! Ovi Mail, Gmail & Hotmail, so one simply needs to add their username & password and then its easy to go.

User’s  browsing experience is limited due to the small screen, but experience was pleasant with the pages rendering beautifully. By use of accelerometer, one can browse in both the portrait and landscape mode. Watchin videos was made possible to the Flash support on the phone. It has pre-loaded links of applications like Facebook, Twitter, hi5, MySpace & YouTube.

An interesting addition to the handset is the Nokia Chat option which proves to be well capable of integrating Gtalk, Yahoo! Messenger, MSN Messenger & Ovi Chat into a single application. Ovi Maps have been pre-loaded that could be used by A-GPS.

Worth a Play

The Nokia 6700 comes with a 5 megapixel auto focus camera having Carl Zeiss optics. It’s accompanied by a dual LED flash that comes handy in low light conditions. The picture quality is great in any condition as it had been expected. A picture size has a range from 0.3 to 5.0 megapixels. Its camera has a number of scenes such as night, portrait, landscape, etc. & along with it also offers extended digital zoom, with self-timer & sequence shot. Moreover its performance looks impressive, it’s about time that Nokia added some innovations like smile or face recognition, or shake control, etc in its camera phones. This handset comes with an option of shooting in the panorama mode which could only be accessed in the video mode.

All videos captured are in VGA resolution which is at 15 frames each second. Considering over the quality one may say that many superior phones had been in this segment. Music player of this phone supports various multiple formats & sound quality is good enough in the loudspeakers & headphones. All songs could be sorted based on albums, artists, genres & composers. It has 6 equalizer presets which include a default one, and they are all editable. It also has options of creating new presets. Some of the other options include bass booster & stereo widening.

FM radio has the capacity of storing up to 50 channels & comes with a RDS support. This handset’s reception is decent & its interface too simple. However, users will be disappointed on the front that Nokia forgot of adding a volume rocker in the phone!

This phone comes with a 2GB memory card with a promising battery backup. A single full charge can easily give 3 hours of calling even if one is indulged in the constant SNS activity, Email & a few hours of music.
