Motorola Droid Razr Maxx Review

Not very long ago, Motorola and Verizon had joined hands to revive the popular Razr line of cell phones in form of Droid Razr and now both the firms are collaborating once again to bring another new Razr called Razr Maxx. Droid Razr Maxx is one of the most high end 4G phones thanks to its 3,300 mAh battery which outclasses all its competitors. Even with such a robust battery, this phone is neither thicker nor heavier than its predecessor. Both Droid Razr Maxx and the original Droid Razr are very much identical. Check out our exclusive Motorola Droid Razr review to know how high Motorola has raised the bar of Razr Maxx?

Motorola Droid Razr Maxx Looks and Design

One must give credit to Motorola for cramming such a huge battery in a phone which is 0.35 inches thick. Droid Razr was quite thin at just 0.28 inches but Razr Maxx is thinner and slimmer than Samsung Galaxy Nexus and iPhone 4S. At 5.1 ounces, Razr Maxx weighs the same as that of Galaxy Nexus. The back of the phone tapers to a slight bump at the top which made it quite easy for us to grip it while making calls. The built quality of the phone is quite tough and the phone feels pretty durable. On the right side of the phone lies the power button while on the left side lies the slot for SIM and microSD card. On the top of the phone you get the headphone, microUSB and the HDMI ports.

Motorola Droid Razr Maxx Screen/Display

Just like the original Droid Razr, Razr Maxx is sports a 4.3 inches super AMOLED display. The display is made up of gorilla glass which resists scratches. The colors looked very rich and thanks to the wide viewing angles we were able to read the contents of the screen pretty well.  Though the images were a bit murkier yet the brightness and the contrast was pretty good. As the display is AMOLED in nature, hence we had no problems in viewing the screen contents in direct sunlight. However when we put Razr Maxx, iPhone 4S and the Galaxy Nexus next to each other, then we could easily make out that the display of iPhone 4S was the brightest among them.

Motorola Droid Razr Maxx Keyboard

Razr Maxx features a couple of keyboards (multi-touch and Swype) while inputting text on a black background. The multi-touch keyboard offered light haptic feedback while Swype comes in handy when you have to enter text with one finger. Thanks to the large display, the keys looked quite big and it was easy for us to input text. We found the landscape mode of the keyboard easier to use than the portrait mode.

Motorola Droid Razr Maxx Features

Software and Interface

Just like the original Droid Razr, Maxx runs on Android 2.3.5 instead of the latest Android 4.0, though it is expected that an upgrade to Ice Cream is round the corner. There are a few numbers of black backgrounds with white text because black consume less power than white on a Super AMOLED display. On the main menu one can see five home-screens which one can fill with widgets. The app menu is very simple and straight forward to use.

Apps

Droid Razr is equipped is Motorola’s MotoCast application which allows you to download files from PC to smartphone. Smart Actions is another useful application found in Droid Razr which helps you to adjust the settings of Droid Razr. For business users you have the QuickOffice app which helps you to view and edit office documents. Some of the other in-built apps in Droid Razr are:-

  • Amazon Kindle
  • Blockbuster
  • Netflix
  • Slacker

Verizon has included its own apps in the phone such as

  • V Cast Tones
  • Verizon Video
  • NFL Mobile

With the My Gallery app one can easily tie up with social networks such as Facebook and Twitter.

Processor and Memory

The phone is equipped with a dual-core 1.2GHz Cortex A-9 processor which provide swift performance. The phone provides an 8GB of internal storage and there is a 16GB of card included in the phone. The memory can be increased to 32GB which is enough to store a large amount of data.

Motorola Droid Razr Maxx Camera Quality

Droid Razr Maxx is equipped with a 8MP camera which delivered detailed images. We found that images clicked outside produced better results than inside and as compared to iPhone 4S, the images captured indoors were a bit fuzzier. One needs to use flash more often on this phone and another issue we faced while taking photos was that it puts the subject too close to the subject. In our test we found continuous auto-focus lens to work quite well. Overall we were quite pleased with the images taken with the camera of Droid Razr Maxx.

Motorola Droid Razr Maxx Video Quality

The phone is capable of recording 1080p videos at 30fps. The videos were quite sharp and smooth but we found that the camera took some time to focus itself properly.

Motorola Droid Razr Maxx Connectivity

Connectivity is seamless with Droid Razr Maxx. The phone provides solid connectivity for 2G, 3G as well as 4G networks. The 4G data performance of the phone was very much at par with Droid Razr and the phone provided high download and upload speeds. Connectivity is also enhanced by the presence of 3.5mm jack, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Wi-Fi hotspot and microUSB 2.0.

Motorola Droid Razr Maxx Retail Package

While unboxing Droid Razr Maxx, we found the phone to be equipped with the following accessories:-

  • Motorola Droid Razr Maxx
  • 16GB MicroSD card
  • Headphone
  • MicroUSB cable
  • User Manual

Motorola Droid Razr Maxx Accessories

The compatible accessories with Droid Razr Maxx are:-

  • Laptopdock 100
  • HD Station
  • VGA Travel Adapter

Motorola Droid Razr Maxx Call Quality

Call quality is very good with Droid Razr Maxx. The phone offered clear and loud calls in either directions and even in crowded areas we did not face problems listening to calls.

Motorola Droid Razr Maxx Battery Life

One of our biggest complaints with 4G LTE phones was their poor battery life. Most of the handsets could barely break the 4 hour mark, but thanks to its massive 3300 mAH battery, Droid Razr Maxx is able to deliver a robust performance. In our laptop battery test which involved continuous surfing over Wi-Fi, the battery of Maxx lasted for over 8 hours. With such a robust battery life, you can expect the phone to go on for long hours without charging.

Motorola Droid Razr Maxx Price

Price of the phone in the USA is approximately $ 300.

Droid Razr Maxx is an impressive phone which boasts of a great battery life which enables it to last twice as long as rival phones such as Samsung Galaxy Nexus and LG Spectrum. We expect to see Android 4.0 soon hitting Droid Razr Maxx which is definitely one of the top notch 4G LTE phone.
