The smart and sleek mobile handset, HTC Smart, is the first phone in the country which is running on Qualcomm developed Brew Mobile Platform. The phone looks too good with smooth rounded finish corners.

The phone has a 3.2-inch resistive touchscreen. Below to it are the four hot keys. Setting key is adjacent to the screen and from here one can go to the settings of home screen directly and can customise it for the idle mode.

When you are using other features, this setting key will take you directly to the sub menu. Apart from this, two calling keys are also there below the screen and the back key is in the centre.

The body of the handset is of smooth rubber finish, but the control keys are surrounded with brushed metal finish.

The volume rocker is on the left panel, and the right panel has the camera key. On the back is a 3.0-megapixel camera with LED flash. On the top panel is 3.5-mm jack and at the bottom is the USB/charging port.

What’s Brewing?

This phone runs on new operating system known as the Brew Mobile Platform (BMP). This operating system is newly developed. From this mobile it seems that the developers of this OS have taken inspirations from other popular operating system to develop the debutante.

Home screen and widgets of HTC Smart

Unlocking the screen is slightly different. You have to drag down a wide band that depicts time, date, profile, battery and other status of the phone. There are four scenes to opt for for the home screen, which can also be customised and edited. Those are Airtel, Work, Lifestyle and Clean Slate.

On the home screen you will see seven panels. The widgets changes according to the scene you opt for. If you want to access more widgets from the home screen then you have to drag the home screen panel towards upside. There you will come across another grid and six more widgets can be added.

One of the screen panels is fully made for adding favourite contacts. Home screen panels are customizable from the nine predefined shortcuts. Well, more than one widget cannot be displayed on the home screen panels. One notification bar is at the top of the screen, but is hardly visible by naked eye. Three dots represent the notification bar and it needs to be dragged down.

The handset lacks accelerometer and hence you need to change the orientation manually for browsing or messaging. Well, the touch interface is good after calibration and stylus is better than finger on the QWERTY keypad.

Browsing, Zooming, Apps on HTC Smart

The handset facilitates kinetic scrolling browsing. However, it lacks multi touch capability. The zooming feature is good. There is a horizontal bar on the screen which can be dragged for zooming in and zooming out.

The landscape or the portrait form can be switched on from the settings key. It is sad to say that the phone does not support YouTube videos. Not to be too sad because it comes pre-loaded with Facebook and Twitter. HTC’s Friend Stream app can also used to integrate all the accounts at a single place and then access those accounts easily.

Smart dialler is embedded in the handset so that with a press of few buttons it quickly searches contact. POP3 and IMAP4 accounts can be set up on it. Well, Gmail and AOL settings are pre-loaded and the emails also support attachment. But sorry to say, it is unable to open doc, excel and PDF files.

Right now the HTC Smart is coming with Airtel carrier so the Airtel App Central is pre-loaded. If you are using with other carrier then Airtel App Cenrtal is unavailable. mBollywood application is also pre-loaded.

The Shutterbug of HTC Smart

The highest resolution of the camera can be set up to 2048 x 1536 pixels. White balance is possible along with flicker, contrast and brightness adjustments. You can also add colour effects. You can either use the flash in auto mode or else keep it always on.

Uploading images on Facebook or sending it though email, SMS or Bluetooth is easy. There are two video formats, MPEG-4 and h.263. The video resolution includes 176×144 pixels or 320×240 pixels. The quality of the video is acceptable.

My Music on HTC Smart

The music player is too good and the reception of FM radio is also good. You can use headphones of your choice in the 3.5 mm jack. You can sort out the songs according to artists and albums. Sound enhancements feature is lacking in the device. On the headphone the sound quality is good, but through loudspeakers it is ok. With one full charge you can listen to two hours of FM radio and make one hour of calling. So, poor battery performance.

Price of HTC Smart

In India the cost of HTC Smart is Rs 9,990. A good option other than this is Samsung Star 3G and it comes at Rs 10,000.
