HTC ChaCha Review

While there are many smartphones in the market focussing on social networking, very few can boast of a dedicated Facebook button. HTC Chacha announced with HTC Salsa during this year’s Mobile World Congress are two cell phones which have dedicated Facebook buttons as well as very deep FB integration. Well, in terms of specifications, ChaCha may not be your state of art Android device but then with millions carving for smartphones satisfying their social networking and messaging needs, HTC ChaCha mobile phone is surely one device which they can look forward to. Check out our exclusive HTC ChaCha review to know what this phone has in store for you.

HTC Chacha Looks And Design

HTC Chacha’s price is less than that of HTC Salsa and hence the build quality of the phone is accordingly to that of a mid range smartphone. ChaCha measures 114.4 x 64.6 x 10.7 mm which makes it a pretty compact device. At the same time it is quite light weighing just 120 grams. The phone gives a solid grip and the nice curves add a touch of elegance to the device. A considerable amount of space has been left between the QWERTY keypad and we felt that this could have been used to make the keys a bit bigger. Most of the phones from HTC boast of a rugged design and feel and Chacha is no different. The design is neat and simple.

HTC Chacha Display

The phone is blessed with a 2.6 inch landscape display of HVGA resolution which has enough pixels thereby ensuring that you do not face any sharpness issues with the device. The touch-screen of Chacha responded quite well to our touches and since the screen is made up of gorilla glass, you do not need to worry a lot about the safety of the screen. The gorilla glass display provides protection against spills and scratches. The quality of images is quite good as its class and we witnessed most of the images were sharp and crisp. Sunlight legibility is however an issue with the display and even with full brightness on, we witnessed that some contrast was lost. But overall, the screen is a solid performer.

HTC Chacha Apps

Apps play a important role for any smartphone. Some of the integrated applications which you will find in HTC ChaCha are

  • Google Search
  • Gmail
  • Clock
  • Google Talk
  • Document Viewer
  • Picasa Integration

The Youtube app in ChaCha helps you to enjoy Youtube videos on your phone. Users can also download their favorite apps from the Android market.

HTC Chacha Features

Let us first check out the software and the OS of HTC Chacha. The phone runs on Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) and is also equipped with HTC Sense with a slightly different version. HTC has worked on the interface to make better usage of the screen in landscape mode. The phone offers you seven homescreen panes, but we were disappointed to find that there is no add or delete option. The call keys serve as shortcuts and HTC has packed the phone with a customization option call Skins. When you change the skin, then the looks and feel of most of the onscreen buttons, apps and other options changes accordingly.

The internal memory of HTC Chacha provides an internal storage space of only 512MB. But the memory can be increased to 32GB with the help of a microSD card. However, the most striking feature of the phone is the presence of a dedicated Facebook button. If you are on the home-screen of the phone with the help of this button you can directly post something on your wall. The phonebook of the phone is quite good and it combines everything right from messaging to emails.

HTC Chacha Keyboard

HTC Chacha Android is equipped with a four row QWERTY keyboard. The keys are quite spacious and typing was a pleasure on them. The keys are curvaceous and gave us a good feedback. However, people with big hands may face some problems using the keys as they were a bit small.

HTC Chacha Email Setup

The phone is equipped with a couple of email apps. One is the traditional Gmail application and the other is the HTC mail application which merges all the email accounts in a single account. The Gmail app allows you to manage multiple Gmail accounts while through HTC mail application you can filter the inbox. HTC email app too is capable of handling multiple mail accounts.

HTC Chacha Camera Quality

The phone features a 5MP camera which captures pictures of resolution measuring 2592×1952 pixels. The camera is also equipped with a single LED flash which helps to click photos in dark. The interface of the camera is is very much the same as that of other HTC phones. We were missing the effects key and the images captured were quite decent. The contrast was fine and the amount of details captured was quite good. Contrast was good too. We did not expect super performance from the camera and the camera did not perform out of the box.

HTC Chacha Video

The phone is capable of capturing D1 videos @ 24fps. The videos are stored in 3GP format and the amount of details captured is quite good.

HTC Chacha Connectivity

We very much appreciate connectivity of HTC Chacha. Connectivity options include quad band GSM/GPRS/EDGE and dual-band 3G. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 3.0 enhances local wireless connectivity and you also get a microUSB cable and HTC Portable Hotspot which supports up to 8 devices. Presence of 3.5mm audio jack completes the connectivity tally.

HTC Chacha Navigation

Navigation of the web is quite good with the latest Android 2.3 Gingerbread web browser but one of the disadvantages of HTC Chacha is the lack of full Flash support in its web browser. The browser however, supports double tap zooming and text reflow.

HTC Chacha Multimedia

The phone has rich multimedia capabilities. You get an FM radio whose interface is pretty simple. The video player supports videos pretty well and is capable of playing videos of various formats.

HTC Chacha Sound Quality

Sound and call quality is very nice with Chacha. We did not experience any drop in calls and our receivers said that they were able to hear us pretty clearly. There were hardly any distortions in calls.

HTC Chacha Accessories

During unxboxing of Chacha we found the device to have the following accessories

  • HTC Chacha
  • Battery
  • MicroSD card
  • USB cable
  • 3.5mm headset
  • Power adapter

HTC Chacha Battery Life

The phone is equipped with a Li-Ion 1250 mAh battery which gives a talk-time of around 7 hours which is pretty good.

HTC Chacha Availability

The phone is available in all the leading HTC retailers across the globe. You can also purchase HTC Chacha online.

HTC Chacha Price

HTC Chacha price in the USA is approximately $ 300 while price of the phone in India is approximately Rs 20,000.

Chacha is a decent smartphone which gives a decent performance. The phone is unique because of its Facebook integration and if you are looking for a smartphone for messaging and social networking then you can bet upon HTC Chacha.
